Is AI Your Ally? by Dayna Verstegen

by Dayna Verstegen

You may have heard the sensational headlines about the risks of artificial intelligence for privacy, biased data, and job displacement. These are crucial issues that regulators, security experts, and technologists must tackle in the coming years. In fact, tech leaders including Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, and Bill Gates will participate in the inaugural AI Insight Forum hosted by the U.S. Senate tomorrow (Wednesday, September 13). For more information, check out this article from VentureBeat.

Does AI represent an “existential threat to humanity” as Musk has opined? I am more inclined to agree with this more pragmatic assessment by Bradley Schurman, founder and CEO of The Super Age:

“Human extinction [by AI] is hyperbolic, given that technology has largely moved society forward historically, paving the way for greater wealth creation and improvements in living and working conditions.” In other words, don’t let fear rob you of a big opportunity!

So, let’s get on with it, shall we? First of all, anyone with an email address can take advantage of artificial intelligence right now using any number of natural language processing chatbots that generate human-like text responses, including Bard, ChatGPT, Perplexity AI, and Jasper. Check out this AI chatbot review by ZDNet to learn the pros and cons of these and more.

The cost of these services varies greatly. Bard by Google is free. You can get unlimited “prompts” with ChatGPT for $9/month or $90/year. ChatGPT-4 is also available on the Bing search engine at no cost. According to Perplexity’s AI, the free version is available to everyone; the cost for “unlimited copilot usage” is $20/month or $200/year. Jasper is a bit more expensive; an individual can subscribe for $39/month.

Dayna, thank you for your research and overview on AI. Your learned analysis is appreciated. I am a little concerned about the AI screening of candidates.
